The Trail Development Process

Prior to publishing, each route goes through an extensive development process as determined in the WA Trail Development Series (the Series), developed in 2019 by DBCA in partnership with trail specialists, key stakeholders, and the trail community. The Series provide guidelines to assist land managers, trail professionals and trail groups in developing and managing trails sustainably and are an important resource for providing a consistent development approach to trails across Western Australia. The intent of these guidelines is to ensure future trails are a recreational asset to the community, and not a liability. Full details relating to how trails are developed in WA can be found here .  The Trail Development Process is as follows:

  • Trail Proposal
  • Framework
  • Site Assessment
  • Concept Planning
  • Corridor Evaluation
  • Detailed Design
  • Construction
  • Management

It is noted that the Trail Development Process should be viewed as cycle, starting again as changes are required. It is a scalable process, allowing for use in the development of any trail – small or large. Although Stage 1 utilises public open roads and did not require the full scope of the Trail Development Process, each route was still proposed and evaluated under this framework. In future stages, where dedicated trail bike trails are to be developed, the entire Trail Development process will be followed.
